Louise Bourgeois
- Synopsis
- Born in 1911 in Paris, after studying art in France, Louise Bourgeois leaves for New York in 1938. An outsider to the art scene, she has few of her own exhibitions until her sculptures find international recognition in the 1970s. Her work, permeated by personal trauma and experience, are reflections on femininity, sexuality, family, and infancy.
Bourgeois’ manner of evoking these themes, using a broad range of materials and objects, and employing giant forms like towering spiders, opens new horizons for avant-garde and contemporary art. - Language
