Gravitation

Synopsis
Explains Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation and gravitational field strength, especially when applied to satellite orbits. Demonstrates the equations involved throughout, and features worked examples and questions for students to try themselves. The programme deals with the following topics:
Fundamental forces - outlines the strong, electromagnetic, weak and gravitational forces;
Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation - explains the inverse square law, F = Gm1m2/r2, and how weight depends on the strength of the gravitational force, but mass remains unchanged.
In orbit 1 - explores the physics involved in apparent weightlessness and orbiting satellites; calculating a spaceship’s speed in orbit where the centripetal force equals the gravitational force.
In orbit 2 - the physics of geostationary satellites; calculating the distances of a geostationary satellite and the Moon from the Earth using equations for circular motion.
Gravitational field strength and the inverse square law - explains how the gravitational field strength changes with distance due to the inverse square relationship, how the escape speed from a planet depends on its mass and radius, how the strength of gravitational field decreases inside a large mass (e.g. the earth) nearer its centre.
