Hamlet is Dying
- Synopsis
- The three musical pieces collected on the CD represent a cross section of the instrumental theatre of Russian composer Alexander Bakshi. The first track, ‘Hamlet is Dying’, is a 18-minute Shakespeare concerto for two violins (Gidon Kremer and Tatiana Grindenk) three string ensembles, double-bass, and bass drum. According to Bakshi, the "composition is based not on the literature, but on the myth about Shakespearean Hamlet". The ‘action’ begins from the moment, when in Shakespeare’s play it’s practically over", focusing on the "deathbed visions and recollections of Hamlet". The composition opens with members of the orchestra behind the stage pronouncing ‘treason, treason...' in English and in Russian.
