Synopsis: Literary critic Harold Bloom talks to Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins about his new book Shakespeare: the Invention of the Human. Bloom explains his view that Shakespeare, through his writing, created the modern notion what of it means to be human being with a personality, emotions and an inner life. He also discusses what he views as the ‘trivialisation’ in the way Shakespeare is taught by college professors; his dissatisfaction with current ‘high-concept’ stage productions of Shakespeare’s works; and his admiration for Shakespearean characters Falstaff and Hamlet.
