Synopsis: The programme focuses on Coriolanus beginning with a recorded excerpt from a BBC production of the play with Patrick Wymark and Maurice Denham. Professor H.F.D. Kitto, University of Bristol, is heard giving a talk on Coriolanus at the World Shakespeare Congress held recently in Vancouver. He explains why, contrary to most classical and Shakespearean critics, he believes Coriolanus to be one of Shakespeare’s most effective tragedies, not one of his most-flawed plays. Victoria, shows how the Coriolanus motif has been used by Beethoven, in the Coriolan Overture. Charlotte Bronte, in her novel Shirley, and T.S. Eliot, in The Wasteland. A recorded excerpt of Eliot reading his poetry is heard.
