Coming to Your Screen: Microsoft’s New Vista & DIY TV

Synopsis
Two programmes on the home technology revolution, made in a collaboration between the BBC’s MONEY PROGRAMME and the Open University’s Open Business School.

MICROSOFT’S NEW VISTA - Microsoft has launched its new operating system, Windows Vista, the long-awaited and much delayed successor to Windows XP. But what does it offer, and why is it so critical for Microsoft? The Money Programme has had exclusive access to Microsoft to follow the launch of Vista. Reporter Max Flint investigates the business of Windows, and asks what effect the departure of Bill Gates in 2008 will have on the future of this company

DIY TV - Broadcasting is going through its biggest change since the invention of television. Nowadays virtually anyone can set up a TV channel and start broadcasting. It’s easy and getting cheaper all the time. In the digital age anyone can make their own programmes and share them with the world online. Max Flint investigates this new world of DIY TV and talks to those seeking fame and fortune there. There is a flood of new companies in this business, from ‘RathergoodTV’ which has its office and studio in a converted farm building to writer and broadcaster Clive James who is broadcasting his new show online. Is DIY TV going to change the face of television forever?

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
