Marcel Duchamp: The Large Glass and Readymades/Film Montage: The Projection of Modernity
- Synopsis
- MARCEL DUCHAMP: THE LARGE GLASS AND READYMADES looks at details of the work of Marcel Duchamp who was a central figure in 20th century art. Several of his pieces such as ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’, ‘The Large Glass’ and some of his ‘Readymades’ are included. Presented by Professor Molly Nesbit of Columbia University and mainly shot in the Philadelphia Museum of Modern Art which holds the most extensive Duchamp collection.
FILM MONTAGE: THE PROJECTION OF MODERNITY - Dr Briony Fer talks about the political aesthetic of film montage and the different approaches that the influential Soviet film-makers. Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov developed as they invented this new visual language of mass communication. Using material from ‘Strike’ and ‘October’ Eisenstein’s approach to dramatised documentary is contrasted with Vertov’s purer mechanical vision in ‘Man with a Movie Camera’. Their shared emphasis on modernity and the city is compared with the formalistic approach taken by their ‘capitalist’ contemporary Walter Ruttman in ‘Berlin: Symphony of a Great City’. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
