Shakespeare: The Merchant of Venice

Synopsis
Rebecca Gatward, director of the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre 2007 production of The Merchant of Venice, talks to Heather Neill about her conception of the play and its staging. She speaks about how Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre works well for the play and is firm in her opinion that the play is a ‘broad comedy’ with Shylock ‘a comic villain’. Neill questions her about a contemporary audience’s reaction to the anti-semitism which many see in the play.
