Great Writers: Anthony Burgess

Synopsis
British novelist and critic Anthony Burgess (1917-1993), was best known for his controversial novel, A Clockwork Orange (1962). He was born in Manchester and was educated at the University of Manchester. He served in the army from 1940 to 1946 and was later appointed education officer in the Colonial Service based in Borneo and Malaya. It was during his time abroad that Burgess wrote his first three novels. Burgess’s novel A Clockwork Orange, set in a violent future in which gangs of adolescents terrorize society, earned him enormous publicity. The work gained a cult following after the release in 1971 of the motion-picture version by American director Stanley Kubrick.
