Peter Brook

Synopsis: Radio talk series. Presenter Gerald Pratley gives an introduction to Peter Brook’s career. There are extracts from a lecture Brook gave in Paris on the aesthetics of cinema and theatre speaking of the danger of artificiality if the director is victimised by style. Anti-style, as perfected by Godard and Shakespeare, is (for Brook) essential for any good effects. In his own productions, Brook combines mythical and natural elements. He cites LORD OF THE FLIES as an example and describes it in detail. Brook says that excessive preoccupation with perfection is destructive. He explains the Elizabethan approach to art and Shakespeare’s term "rough magic". His artistic criterion is only that of force and clarity in his statement.
