Impressionists, The

Synopsis
A drama documentary about the illustrious brotherhood of Impressionist artists - Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne and Manet. Based on documentary evidence, special effects transport the viewer inside some of the world’s best-loved paintings and recreate the illuminated landscapes, and haunting portraits of late 19th-century France. DVD Extras: Picture gallery, atists’ biographies and cast filmographies. Broadcast in 3 parts. In part 1 Claude Monet remembers his early days in the Bohemian world of 19th century Paris, where he meets his friends and allies Auguste Renoir and Edgar Degas. Rejected by the Paris art world and beset by poverty, they refuse to compromise their bold new approach to painting. When war breaks out with Prussia, tragedy strikes; Part 2 - the young painters are preparing for their first exhibition, but Paris isn’t ready for their new style of painting. Edgar Degas, becoming more lonely and malicious, paints nudes as they have never been seen before, while Claude Monet, still dogged by poverty, faces tragedy in his private life; Part 3 - Cezanne, son of a self-made banker, lives a double life with his mistress and secret child. Viciously attacked by the critics, he never compromises his work and continues to suffer for his art. Monet splits away from the Impressionist movement, eventually finding love and creative fulfilment.
