Healthcare and Poor Relief in Early Modern Lubeck
- Synopsis
- In the early modern period, health and welfare care was provided by both religious and secular bodies. This covered medical assistance as well as material help such as food and clothing for the needy.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the North German city of Lubeck was a thriving port. The Protestant Reformation provided improvements to municipal health care at that time and the concept of universal charity to the needy was replaced by a drive to minimise begging and help the deserving poor to remain in good health and to support themselves. At the same time it was recognised that some poor people would not be able to do this. Cities like Lubeck employed salaried officials and paid fees to private practitioners to treat the poor. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
