In one scene V interrupts three policemen about to assault Evey, takes out a dagger, and quotes from the sergeant in Macbeth I ii ‘The multiplying villainies of nature do swarm upon him’ and ‘Disdaining fortune, with his brandish’d steel/Which smoked with bloody execution’; he later quotes again from Macbeth (I vii) ‘I dare do all that may become a man;/ Who dares do more is none’.
