Synopsis

Radio documentary. Jeremy Nicholas investigates the current status of Shakespeare in the popular imagination; he talks to representatives from the acting profession, teachers, children and people in the street. He puts forward the view that Shakespeare is now more important as an industry than as a writer, and that very few English-speaking people either know or care much about his work. He comments on acting styles and the way in which Shakespeare is taught in schools. Tourists in Stratford upon Avon try to quote from Shakespeare and Jeremy Nicholas speaks of his experience as an 11-year old acting in Shakespeare play.
