Synopsis

Radio programme. A two-part series in which Humphrey Carpenter investigates the attraction of Shakespeare for musicians and composers. Part 1 claims that Shakespeare’s works have inspired over 20,000 pieces of music from ballets to film scores. In the first programme, David Bintley, of the Birmingham City Ballet, opera director David Poutney, conductor Mark Elder and Stephen Banfield - an expert on musicals - discuss Shakespeare’s influence. In part 2, the RSC’s director Adrian Noble, director of theatre music at Shakespeare’s Globe, Claire van Kampen, and composer Stephen Warbeck continue the discussion.
