Guided Boring

Synopsis
The technology of guided boring has revolutionised methods of installing underground pipes and cables. No longer is it necessary to dig trenches which disrupt traffic, upset commerce and inconvenience entire communities. Guided boring systems install power and telecommunication cables and gas and water pipes with little surface disturbance. Accurate electronic steering and monitoring allows bores up to 24 inches in diameter to be driven in curved profiles, around buried obstacles and beneath buildings, railroads and waterways.

This video shows how to plan, set up and conduct a job using guided boring for a variety of applications. It demonstrates the types of instrumentation to use to investigate the site and guide the path of the bore to close accuracies. Shows a variety of installations and discusses how to choose the right kind of support equipment-drill heads and reamers, drill pipes, drilling fluids-for different ground conditions, including rock.
