Title
Sewer and Utility Tunnelling in Soft Ground
Synopsis
Shows the types of shield and permanent lining systems used today in the construction of tunnels in the usual size range for sewer and utility tunnels. The choice of shield and tunnel lining depends on ground conditions and the utility to be carried: water, wastewater, gas or cables for power or communications. Specialised muds and polymers also have important functions in the performance of slurry machines, earth pressure balance machines (EPBs) and pipe jacking. Methods of shaft construction - cofferdams, caissons, slurry diaphragm walls or temporary linings - are principally determined by local soils, groundwater and equipment size.

Title
Design and Installation of Buried Pipes
Synopsis
This video is about pipe types and soil types and how, through good design and installation, they interact to form effective pipe-soil systems. It shows the basic structural assumptions that designers make about the installation of rigid and flexible pipe in specific soil conditions. As we see the stages of pipeline construction - excavating the trench, preparing the foundations, placing the bedding and placing and compacting the embedment soil and backfill to design specifications - we understand how designers and installers must work together to provide long lasting pipelines which will serve many future generations.

Title
Geosynthetics in Landfills
Synopsis
Geosynthetics technology is an effective engineering solution to a vital modern problem - the safe containment, collection and disposal of leachate from landfills. Geomembranes contain the leachate, while geonets and various geocomposites are designed to collect and remove it. Today’s typical landfill project may also include geotextiles for filtration and separation, and geogrids for reinforcement. This video discusses the functions and properties of some of these geosynthetic materials, together with some key issues in landfill design. Co-sponsored by the International Geosynthetics Society.

Title
Geosynthetics in Reinforced Soil Structures
Synopsis
Geotextiles, geomembranes and related products have had a significant impact on civil and geotechnical engineering. These materials provide a means of improving performance and reducing costs on a variety of projects. Like all engineering materials, however, they must be treated with respect. Design with geosynthetics must be based on sound engineering principles and proper construction techniques. Specifications should be attended to appropriately and standard tests and procedures followed to determine the engineering properties of the materials to be used.

Title
Geosynthetics in Transportation Applications
Synopsis
This video shows how geosynthetics have proved durable and reliable materials in the construction and repair of roads, railroads, airfields and other transportation facilities. These materials have significant economic as well as engineering advantages. Their use allows smaller volumes of expensive backfill and aggregate - and backfill can represent up to 80% of the cost of a project. As geosynthetics are easy to transport and handle, they allow construction on sites which could not have been contemplated before. Co-sponsor: The International Geosynthetics Society.

Title
Sewer Pipeline Rehabilitation
Synopsis
Sewer failure is increasingly common, especially in urban areas with ageing sewer networks. Their replacement by conventional open-cut methods is expensive, disruptive and, in some parts of the world, penalised. This video shows a variety of systems and no-dig technologies now available for the inspection, repair, maintenance, renovation and on-line replacement of deteriorated sewer pipelines. Sewer rehabilitation methods which allow continuing use of existing sewer networks are not only less disruptive but can also bring very significant cost savings.

Title
Soil Erosion and Sediment Control
Synopsis
Erosion not only removes billions of tonnes of our soil each year, but also transports it downstream as sediment to silt up waterways and pollute water courses. After discussing the causes of soil erosion (particularly accelerated erosion caused by construction, mining and forestry activities) this video shows a range of practices and technologies which mitigate erosion by keeping a cover on the surface. Co-sponsored by the International Erosion Control Association.

Title
Trenchless Technology
Synopsis
Complete insight into trenchless techniques for new installation, on-line replacement and in-situ renovation of sewers, pressure pipes and cables. It shows these systems on the job, explains their principles and indicates the ground conditions and other situations where each system would be appropriate.
