In this film Humphrey Jennings collects and edits the sounds and sights of wartime Britain into an extraordinarily moving and effective collage. Records the roar of Spitfires and tanks, the noise of furnaces and factories, the march of miners and soldiers, music and songs in trains, dance halls, canteens, and the war-time concerts at the National Gallery. With Flanagan and Allen, Dame Myra Hess and the RAF Orchestra.

Synopsis
A picture of life in Britain during the final year of World War II. The film focuses on the personal lives of various representative characters and on the wider wartime context, and is in the form of a diary covering a baby’s first year of life. Includes the gravedigger’s scene from ‘Hamlet’ with John Gielgud. Though this film was shot in 1944-45 it was not released until after the war.

This innovative feature-length film is the story of 24 hours in the life of an Auxiliary Fire Service unit in the London Blitz. This is the full version of the cinema classic FIRES WERE STARTED, which captured the mood of a Britain under siege. Using real firefighters, it became the tribute to the work of the service during the war.
