Struggle for Sustainable Tourism, The: An Ecuadorian Case Study

Synopsis
Study of a new project in ecotourism. The people of Santa Lucia, a farming community on the slopes of the Andes, were foreced to abandon their traditional way of life because of laws brought in to protect the could forest where they live. Previously, they destroyed the forest but they have now learned the skills of conservation and sustainability and have built an eco lodge for tourists. Their biggest challenge is probably to market themselves in a competitive tourism business. Eco-tourism is seen as the model for sustainable tourism, but examines whether projects like this can make a difference when so much of the rainforests is still being destroyed.
