Life Running out of Control

Synopsis
Problems and ethical questions arising from genetic modification of plants and animals. An exploration of the progressive and continual genetic manipulation of plants, animals and human beings. In India farmers face ruin owing to a disastrous crop of genetically modified cotton, and are selling their kidneys or committing suicide. In Canada genetically modified canola seeds blow on to the fields of neighbouring organic farms, thus making ecological farming impossible. The Icelandic parliament sells the entire pool of genes of its population to a private company that, in turn, intends to turn over the data at a profit to the pharmaceutical industry and insurance companies.
Information on minority ethnic groups collected as research ends up in the laboratories of industry to provide the basis of patents. World-wide only a handful of idealistic scientists are doing independent research on the effects of transgenic animals and plants on the environment and on our health when we eat genetically modified food.
