Fire in the House

Synopsis
The Building Act 1984 and the Building Regulation provide a legal framework for fire safety standards in new and altered houses. Approved documents give guidance to building designers and building control professionals but to make best use of that guidance they also need to understand the purpose and function of the systems that are available for protecting people in a fire.

A series of demonstration fires was set up at the Building Research Establishments Cardington large-scale laboratory in order to show how the different systems behave in a real house fire.

FRS, the Fire and Risk Sciences Division of BRE, with support from government and industry, has produced this video to illustrate the events.
