All Systems Go: Energy Systems of the Human Body

Synopsis
Investigates the three energy systems of the human body (ATP-PC, lactic and aerobic) and shows how they function together to supply the body’s energy. Deals with the following topics: 1) inside muscles - voluntary and involuntary muscles, muscle fibre and myofibrils, how ATP releases energy, myosin and actin filaments, cross-bridges, slow twitch and fast twitch fibres. 2) ATP and the three energy systems - the basic chemistry of the ATP-PC system, the lactic acid system (anaerobic glycolysis), the aerobic system (aerobic glycolysis), carbohydrate loading; 3) the energy systems working together - oxygen uptake, submaximal effort, aerobic capacity, anaerobic threshold, oxygen deficit, causes of fatigue and exhaustion; 4) training the body - how anaerobic/aerobic energy systems are utilized in different activities, the specificity principle, chronic effects, anaerobic/aerobic training, stroke volume. NB The video incorporates research by exercise physiologists which suggests that the aerobic energy system contributes larger aoiunts of energy much earlier in physical activity than previously thought.
