Synopsis: Examines data security in computer systems, looking at the threats to data and what steps can be taken to keep data safe. Throughout the programme, Monash University is used as a case study to highlight the key points made. Diagrams and expert comments from industry professionals are also included.

Deals with environmental, human, accidental and intentional threats to data, sources of threat (internal, external). Discusses the need to determine the level of security required and the range of measures that should be implemented - 1) Physical - locking doors, perimeter fences, UPSs; 2) Electronic - passwords, firewalls, anti-virus software, encryption; 3) Procedural - policies and protocols, backup procedures, disk-mirroring; 4) Human - training, trust / controlling access
