Spectrophotometry

Synopsis
Explains the principles of spectral analysis. Covers: how spectroscopy analyses the spectrum of light from different sources using a spectroscope; how spectrophotometry measures how much light is absorbed or transmitted by a given material; how a spectrophotometer can measure the absorbance and transmittance of a wavelength of light; the mathematical relationship between absorbance (A) and transmittance (T); Beer’s Law (the direct relationship between concentration and absorbance); how the absorbance spectrum of a substance can be used to help identify its chemical compositon; how spectrophotometry can be used of analyse samples which cannot be changed or destroyed; how to use a spectrophotometer in determining the concentration of asprin in an unknown solution; the importance of wearing protective eyewear and taking proper safety measures.
