Photoelectric Effect, The

Synopsis
Explains the photoelectric effect and tells the story of its discovery, investigation and eventual explanation by Einstein, which brought about the revolutionary notion that light is a stream of photons, and the development of quantum mechanics.

The video deals in turn with the following topics: Hertz’s discovery of the photoelectric effect whilse investigating electromagnetic radiation; the wave-nature of light - how light sources form interference patterns which suggests that light must travel in waves; Lenard’s investigations of the photoelectric effect and his discovery that increasing light frequency rather than light intensity increased the maximum kinetic energy of electrons, which caused problems with the wave theory of light; Einstein, Planck and the ‘ultraviolet catastrophe’ - how black body radiation theory disagreed with experiemental data until Planck worked out his concept of energy quanta (E = hf); Einstein’s explanation of the photoelectric effect - all light (EMR) consists of energy quanta called photons, the maximum kinetic energy of photons depends on light frequency and electron escape energy (W), calculations of cut-off potential and work function; applicatons of the photoelectric effect - photo-sensors, light meters, solar cells, etc.
