Title
Photoelectric Effect, The
Synopsis
Investigates the photoelectric effect and begins to quantify the photon model of light. Shows how to solve photoelectric emission problems using Einstein’s equation. Explains how the intensity and/or frequency of the incident radiation or the material of the photocathode affect photoelectric emission. Discusses the role of the photoelectric effect in photosynthesis, photovoltaic cells, CCDs and vision.
Duration
28 mins

Title
Wave-Particle Duality
Synopsis
Examines x-ray production (e.g. as in medical use), the photoelectric and Compton effects, and wave-particle duality as it applies to photons. Introduces de Broglie’s notion of matter waves as another example of wave-particle duality. Explains qualitatively the Compton effect and the de Broglie hypothesis applying the laws of mechanics, the conservation of momentum and energy to protons. Examines the medical use of x-rays in terms of a risk-benefit analysis.
