Thinking Allowed- Philosophy for Children

Alternative title
Thinking Together - Philosophy for Children
Synopsis
In a Philosophy for Children session, a teacher uses a story, a picture, a news item or a piece of music to stimulate thinking and imagination. Children are encouraged to express their thoughts and emotions, to challenge what is being said and to ask questions that intrigue them.

In this film, you will see teachers at Gallions Primary School in east London using an approach called Philosophy for Children (P4C) to shape communities of enquiry in their classrooms.

A step-by-step guide to the approach shows how the facilitator uses a story or other stimulus to spark children’s thinking, encouraging them to raise their own questions, share their thoughts and feelings, and justify their arguments. Comparative footage of children in Marimba class, first filmed in year 3, demonstrates what a difference weekly sessions of enquiry can make to what was an average mixed-ability and multilingual group. By the end of Key Stage 2 over 50% of the class achieved Level 5 in English Reading and Writing. Secondary teachers will not fail to be impressed by the vivid language and complex thought in their year 6 enquiry.
