Day care
Synopsis
With an increasing proportion of mothers in full-time work, the demand for day care has escalated. Located in a day care nursery, and looking at the views of parents, carers and psychological experts, this video discusses some of the possible effects of day care on children. Divided into 3 parts: 1) Researching day care - examines some of the methods involved in studying day care, including experimental methods such as the ‘strange situation’, and some of the difficulties involved in interpreting the results; 2) The effects of day care -
starting with Bowlby’s famous theory of attachment, this part explores the possible effects of day care on young children’s emotional, cognitive and social developments; 3) Saying the right things? - in the 1950s when most mothers stayed at home to look after their children, psychologists were stressing how important this was for their childrens development. At the end of the 20th century, with more and more children in day care, psychologists were enthusing about the positive aspects of good day care. This brief final section raises the question of whether or not psychologists are simply telling people what they want to hear.

Eating disorders
Synopsis
Located in Rhodes Farm, a world famous centre for the treatment of eating disorders, this video examines the major psychological theories of the cause of eating disorders. As well as the children themselves, there are contrasting contributions from two of the leading authorities in the field: Dr. Dee Dawson and Susie Orbach. Divided into three sections: 1) A biological basis? - outlines what is meant by an eating disorder and looks at some of the insights and limitations of biological explanations; 2) Dying to be thin: a culture of thinness - uses a series of stark images and personal experiences to document the pressures on young people, and on girls in particular, to lose weight. But why is it only some people who suffer from eating disorders?; 3) Happy families -
starting with the question raised at the end of the previous section, the final part examines some of the explanations that locate the origins of eating disorders within ‘disfunctional’ families.

Obedience and ethics
Synopsis
Conformity is essential to social life. But behind the familiar order of everyday life lurk some uncomfortable truths. Psychological experiments have shown that our desire to conform can lead us into mistrusting our own experiences, turn a blind eye to the suffering of others and, sometimes, inflict harm on others. But these findings come at a price - the possible harm to those being studied. Should psychologists be doing this type of research?
This video is based around a proposed student research into school bullying to provide a ‘student friendly’ insight into some of the key ethical issues raised. Commentary is provided by one of the leading authorities on ethics in psychological research, Professor Nick Embler of the London School of Economics

The programme is divided into three sections: 1) Obeying authority - focuses on Stanley Milgram’s obedience experiments, looks at the work’s origins in the holocaust, its methods and findings, and concludes by asking whether the research should have been done; 2) Ethics and research: a case study - this section begins by looking at what an ethical issue is in psychological research and, drawing on the previous section, outlines three major ethical issues: consent, deception and harm. It then concludes with an examination of how these issues relate to a student project on bullying; 3) Going too fa - shows the outcome of the students’ deliberation of ethical constraints and this is used, in a brief concluding section, to raise the question of whether or not ethical concerns are preventing important research from being done.
