Upward Spiral, The

Synopsis
A video aimed at people who, for a variety of reasons, have been seeking new employment for an extended period. The aim is to inspire the viewer. It features nine real people (not actors) who have been in in this situation themselves and have come successfully through it. The video concentrates on the changing experiences, emotions and feelings of the nine jobseekers. The first part of the programme deals with the downward spiral which includes lack of confidence and self-esteem, financial difficulty, loneliness, apathy, family and domestic problems, depression and even substance abuse. All of these make jobsearchig even harder. The participants talk about the training and support programmes that are widely available for the long-term unemployed in the UK. The second part of the video shows how the spiral begins to turn upwards. Structure and purpose return to their lives, confidence improves and jobsearching skills are acquired. The jobseekers realise that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
