Seattle Syndrome
- Synopsis
- Many factory workers in the Philippines want an improvement in their working conditions and rates of pay. But they are also scared of losing their jobs if they protest too loudly. Their jobs depend on the factories staying open - guaranteed by factory bosses winning contracts from abroad by turning out goods at the lowest possible cost. Now they’re running up against the Seattle Syndrome - an alliance of liberals and protectionists who want yet more restrictions on trade to fight poor wages and exploitative working conditions. Is the Seattle Syndrome a justifiable way of fighting globalisation - or could it be a kind of colonialism in disguise? Includes contributions from Naomi Klein, Francis Fukuyama, James Wolfensohn and Robert Reich.
