Business Structures
- Synopsis
- Explains what the structure of a business means, using case studies including Daimler Chrysler, Burger King, Easy Jet, ferry company Stena Line and drugs company Eli Lilly.
Businesses are structured in many different ways. Three classic approaches are by function, by product and by geography, but there are also grey areas and companies adopt a mix of structures to suit their needs. Covers the differences between "tall" and "flat" types of structure and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of both. In the final analysis, structure is about communications - who holds power and how decisions are made. In practice firms often manage to work in spite of their structures, not because of them. In recent years, the drive to make companies "more efficient" has led to job losses and extra stress on those who remain. Business structures may seem an abstract subject, but they have a real impact on jobs and lives. - Language
