Challenge of Devolution, The: Human Resource Management at Inchcape UK

Synopsis
This video is to accompany the printed case study ‘The Challenge of Devolution: Human Resource Management at Inchcape UK’ (403-007-1). The abstract of the case is as follows: In this case study, a number of challenges faced by the HR director of Inchcape UK are presented: what kind of role should the HR department play? How big should the HR department be? How much freedom should line managers have in implementing HR policy? These are challenges common to any organisation with an HR department, and the purpose of the case study is to allow students to see the solutions proposed by Inchcape, to evaluate them against models, theories and other practical examples in the field of HRM, and to debate their own potential solutions. In the case study, the current situation within Inchcape is described, with particular focus on the role of line managers in HRM. The teaching note was written by Dr Katie Truss of Kingston University.
