When the Lights Go on Again

Synopsis
Third programme in the series BRITAIN’S HOME FRONT covering the period 1943-47. Tells the story of the British people preparing for war and living through the events of the ‘Phoney War’, Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the Blitz - capturing their hopes, fears, joys, tears and laughter.
Ordinary people tell how they coped with everyday life against a backdrop of air raid shelters, evacuation, gas masks, the home guard and even getting married wearing decontamination suits. These eyewitness accounts are illustrated by wartime Movietone newsreel coverage of the Blitz on London and Coventry, the King and Queen touring the East End to raise morale and much more. Also featured are public information films that were used to help teach the pubic vital skills such as using gas masks or building air raid shelters.
