Synopsis: Second programme in the series BRITAIN’S HOME FRONT, covering the period 1942-43. In the Summer of 1940 Britain braced itself for invasion and and endured nightly horrors of the London Blitz. The invasion never came, but the war was far from won and the people had to prepare themselves for years of deprivation and sacrifice. This video looks at the realities of life in Britain during the early years of the war, using interviews, archive footage, contemporary films and expert commentary.
A member of Britain’s ‘Secret Army’ reveals top secret plans to fight the Nazi invaders had they come, together with a look at our defences and special ‘flame weapons’. A former Land Girl recalls how women helped to keep Britain fed and a wartime fireman gives a first hand account of the struggle to save London during the Blitz.
