Inside a Factory: The Bmw Mini
- Alternative title
- Inside a Factory: The New Mini
- Synopsis
- Alison Hammond goes inside BMW’s Mini factory in Oxford and explores the key stages of the production process. She begins by looking at production planning and the ‘Kiss’ computer program that analyses the orders for many different types and variations of Mini. Stage 2 is the 228 robots welding the basic car framework together and quality control. Then comes painting and waxing. While the basic shell is put together in Oxford, the other parts come from all over the world. These are ordered on a ‘just-in-time’ basis to minimise storage space and costs. Stage 4 is the final assembly of the 2,416 separate components. Finally the video looks at teamworking, health & safety issues and environmental factors.
