Year of the Sex Olympics, The

Synopsis
Broadcast in 1968 as part of BBC2’s THEATRE 625 series. Originally in colour, only a black and white version now survives. In a world dominated and run by TV executives, programmes are created to control an overpopulated world’s desires. ‘Watch not do’ is the message, so there are gluttony programmes to put people off food and pornography programmes to put them off sex, including the latest creation, the Sex Olympics. Yet to keep the audience passive, programmes must keep pushing the boundaries. As interest wanes in the Sex Olympics, a new concept is proposed - a reality-based programme in which a family are stranded on a bleak island, without the aid of modern technology, and their efforts to survive are filmed 24 hours a day. DVD extras include an introduction by Kim Newman; feature commentary by Brian Cox; ROM content (downloadable) of Nigel Keane’s original script; biography of director Michael Elliott.
