Thai Hilltribe Embroideries

Synopsis
The videos in the SURVIVING TRADITIONS series have all been filmed on location in countries where craft traditions still survive. This film has been made with the cooperation of the local people. It is not a travel film but a vital record of tradtional processes and techniques within the social, cultural and historical context in which their skills have survived.
Over the last few centuries six quite distinct tribal groups have migrated to live in the mountains of Northern Thailand. They brought with them their own culture, language and dress. This video shows in detail the embroideries of the six hilltribes and the costumes that they adorn. Includes: a Karen blouse with seed emboidery, Yao trousers with horizontal/vertical stitch, a Lisu hat with stitched braids, a Lahu dress with patchwork panels, an Akha jacket with couched applique, Blue Hmong batik and applique and White Hmong reverse applique.
