Civil War: The Breakdown

Synopsis
In this course Tristam Hunt looks at what used to be thought of an an English civil war between Roundheads and Cavaliers - and shows that it was in fact a war between three kingdoms and two religions, and its influences are still felt to this day.
In this first programme an arrogant King attacks Protestanism when it was already under threat in/from Europe. Scotland had none of it. Begins with the mutilation of Prynne, Burton and Bastwicke - seen as religious fundamentalists of their day by the established church. In Europe, Protestants and Catholics had been warring for over twenty years and in Protestant Britain there was a fear that Catholicism was on the rise. When the distrusted Charles 1 (and his Catholic Queen) introduces changes that seem to move towards Catholicism, Scotland, the most Protestant of Charles’ kingdoms, revolts. The resulting skirmishes meant that the King has to go to Parliament for money - they give him none and instead trump up charges against the Earl of Stafford - the King’s most loyal aid. The King caves in. Stafford is executed, and peace returns. But then news comes in of great atrocities in Ireland.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
