Learning to Talk

Synopsis
Gives a practical insight into speech development during a child’s first two years. The film follows two children as they learn the basics of language. After looking briefly at the first year, when the foundations of communication are laid, the children are shown learning the basics of language. Shows how the first words lead on from the pre-verbal stage and how, in a relatively short space of time children begin to put sentences together. Gives clear examples of both active and passive vocabulary, generalisation of words, telegraphic speech, two word sentences and much more. As well as following the developmental stages, mention is also made of the sort of activities that help at each stage and how important it is to listen to children and interact with them.
