Time and Transmitters

Synopsis
A series of six programmes in which five scientists are marooned, with very basic equipment, on the Caribbean island of Carriacou, just north of Granada, where they are challenged to use their scientific knowledge as survival skills. The participants are Mike Bullivant (chemist), Kathy Sykes and Jonathan Hare (physicists), Mike Leahy (virologist) and Ellen McCallie (ethnobotanist).

In this third programme the challenge is how to keep in touch and when to do it. First the team must make a transmitter and receiver able to communicate over half a mile. They do so using a car battery, spark transmitter, wire and a razor blade. They also build a clock which chimes on the hour as well as two portable timepieces synchronised to the main clock. The third challenge is to make a kite from plant leaves to carry an aerial.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
