Systems in Retailing
- Synopsis
- Looks at the impact of computer-based information systems on retailing, taking the example of Marks & Spencer. At the heart of the Marks & Spencer system is the IT centre at Stockley Park. Here mainframe computers deal with 2,500 million instructions per second, monitoring what’s been sold and then ordering up new stock. Aspects covered include electronic point of sale systems (EPOS) which have replaced cash tills; the use of computers in M&S’s national supplier network and distribution system including monitoring lorry drivers and product manufacture; stock control; buying via the internet. IT may make superstores more efficient and powerful, but the programme also considers the impact on small shops, jobs and the environment.
