Picasso: Magic, Sex and Death
- Synopsis
- A biography of Picasso, originally shown as a 3-part television series, presented by his friend and biographer, John Richardson. The first programme reveals the influence of magic on the artist’s life and work, likening him to a shaman, and charts his first great achievements as a poor artist in Paris. The second programme examines Picasso’s highly complex attitudes towards sexuality, as seen through his art. For Picasso, sexuality informed his whole psyche and shaped his art immeasurably. Draws upon the stories of Picasso’s great loves - his first wife Olga, his teenage mistress Marie Therese Walter, and his weeping woman Dora Maar. The third programme explores Picasso’s lifelong fixation with death, his wartime years in Paris and his final days in the South of France. Includes contributions from his former lover François Gilot and their children, Paloma and Claude.
