Separation, Purification and Identification
- Synopsis
- One of a series of eight book-and-CD-ROM packages developed for the Open University’s course THE MOLECULAR WORLD (S205), which provides a broad foundation in chemistry by introducing fundamental ideas, principles and techniques. The series also demonstrates the central role of chemistry in science and the importance of a molecular approach in biology and Earth sciences. The interactive multimedia CD-ROMs contain video material and revision questions and exercises.
This book looks at the common techniques used to prepare, purify and indentify chemicals. Topics including distillation, recrystallisation, chromatography, elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are discussed, and are illustrated on video on the accompanying CD-ROMs. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are covered entirely through multi-media, with animations and virtual experiments. The reader is provided with examples for interpretation, and can draw in the structures using the software provided. There is also a set of interactive self-assessment questions. In all, the multi-media software suite comprises more than twelve hours of material. Separation, Purification and Identification concludes with a Case Study on Forensic Science, in which illustrations of criminal cases where spectroscopic techniques provided evidence are given. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
