Elgar (1962)
- Synopsis
- Originally shown on 11 November, 1962, as the 100th programme in the BBC’s MONITOR series. Made at a time when much that is now known about Elgar had yet to be published, this programme was groundbreaking in that the BBC relaxed its taboo on using actors in factual films, although Russell was only allowed actors if they appeared in long shot and spoke no dialogue. The only voice is that of the narrator, Huw Wheldon.
The video and DVD also include ‘home movie’ footage of Elgar at the Three Choirs Festivals in Hereford and Worcester, and film of the 1931 live recording of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ which celebrated the opening of the Abbey Road Studios. DVD extras include a commentary on the film by Ken Russell and music critic Michael Kennedy, a stills gallery and director’s biography. - Series
