Diabetes

Synopsis
The video, divided into four sections, discusses the symptoms, diagnostic testing, treatment and biochemical basis of diabetes mellitus.

Section one, Presentation, demonstrates the incidence of insulin-dependent and non-insulin dependent diabetes, and the difference between the two. The symptoms and possible long-term effects of poor control of blood glucose are discussed.

Section two, Diagnostic Testing, looks at the simple kits used for self-testing of urine and blood, and the HbA 1c laboratory test for glycated haemoglobin.

Section three, Treatment, examines the need to monitor blood glucose levels, and the importance of diet, weight control and, if required, administration of the correct amount and type of insulin.

Section four, Biochemistry, shows how glucose transporter proteins work and the role of insulin in stimulating increased uptake of glucose from the blood.
