Ask Us Cd-Rom

Synopsis
A multi-media presentation which captures on to CD-ROM the views of disabled children and young people. It is a compilation of a year’s consultation by The Children’s Society with 200 children and young people across England. The work was undertaken by disabled children who were paid as researchers and provided with training and ongoing staff support, to help research and compile the material and to present their findings to policy-makers both locally and nationally.

The multi-media approach has allowed disabled children and young people who cannot speak or write to be fully involved, by allowing them to present their messages using the media that they prefer: video, music, art, photography, animation, stories, interviews and discussion.

The messages and images contained in this CD-ROM challenge the assumption that impairment prevents disabled children expressing their views. Through the CD-ROM, young people tell us that they want what other children want; to do what other children do and to go where other children go. They want respect, to be consulted, to have more independence, resources, support and access. Most of all they want the right to be heard.
