Business in the Economy II: Manufacturing in the West Midlands

Synopsis
The Black Country in the West Midlands was the cradle of Britain’s industrial revolution and for over 200 years it’s been famous as a centre of manufacturing. But now the factories are closing down and young people want to move away. Explores the Black Country economy through he experience of a factory worker who has lived there all her life. Shows the impact of the varying fortunes of primary, secondary and tertiary industries on the local economy. The steel works closed in 1979. Now the area’s next biggest employer, Goodyear, is on the brink of closure. Asks whether the service sector can replace the jobs lost in manufacturing. Local services also face problems, but is private investment the answer? Looks at the changing nature of the workforce and raises the problem of racism.
