Synopsis
The 12 films in the series, shot over a period of three years with a Chinese crew, show everyday life in contemporary China.
1: deals with the world of Kao Chou Lan, a solderer in a locomotive factory, showing her life in the family and in the factory.
2: Shows a rehearsal at the Peking Opera.
3: Pictures life and work in the fishing industry in Da Yu Dao, Shantung Province. Focuses especially on the young women who have become sailors for the first time in the village’s history.
4: A class of high-school children and their teachers demonstrate the tactics whereby conservative notions of hierarchy based on punishment and obedience are actively called into question within a mutual criticism session in which students and teachers have equal voice.
5: Shows scenes of the Peking Circus.
6: Looks at the work and organisation of Pharmacy No 3, Shanghai, which is known for its outstanding attempts to ‘serve the people’.
7: Shows traditional handicrafts.
8: Shows an army camp in Nanking.
9: Looks at a factory near Shanghai that produces turbines, Shows a campaign of criticism against the management mounted by the workers and political study sessions.
10: Professor Tsien, an eminent Chinese scientist, recounts his experiences of the Cultural Revolution when he became a target for the Red Guards and his own students.
11: The development of Ta Ching, the new oilfields in north China, intended help China become self-reliant in material resources.
12: A walk through one of the largest cities in the world, and encounters with its inhabitants.
