Aphid-Trapping Potato Plants: A Scientific Project of Dr R W Gibson

Synopsis
'Solanum berthaultii’, an insect-resistant wild potato from Bolivia, has abundant sticky-tipped hairs on the foliage to which small insects and mites get stuck. In contrast, the foliage of cultivated potatoes does not obstruct movement of potential pests. Stereoscan pictures show the ‘Solanum berthaultii’ hairs and a trapped aphid in detail. Shows results of preliminary plant breeding trials where quite good tuber yield is combined with sticky-tipped hairs on the foliage to which aphid pests adhere and die.
