Apes of Barbary

Synopsis
Shot in the cedar forest of the Moroccan Middle Atlas Mountains, the film records the social behaviour and ecology of ‘Macaca sylvanus’. It shows the large homerange overlap between groups and how spectacular tree shaking displays are used in intergroup encounters. Feeding habits at different seasons are discussed in detail. To illustrate the peaceful social life of this species the film includes sexual, grooming and spacing behaviour and the development of the young. It features the care of the babies by both sexes and describes interactions where one individual (male or female) uses a baby to regulate its behaviour with another.
